Thank you so much for letting us know an update on the gorillas even though it is sad and painful, and it must have been terribly hard to write. We are all mourning along with you. Gorilla on gorilla violence is the worst. Especially when it involves the youngest and most innocent members of the group. But as was mentioned above, there is a tiny bit of comfort in knowing these deaths came naturally and not from human cruelty.
Thank you again for all that you do! And wishing you all a wonderful holiday season!
Best,
Megan

Sad news indeed! I was excited to hear about the twins and was so hoping they would survive. Quite a loss when the numbers when the numbers are so low. Poor Shinda had to be in pain with his stomach ulcerated. The deaths from violence among the gorillas is hard to take but that is part of their society. Especially since they were so young. I hope we have more babies among the Virunga gorillas to lift our spirits a bit after these deaths. 5 new babies so far but with the four deaths it seems we are barely staying ahead in overall numbers. Thanks Dr. Lucy for sharing the news even though it was sad. We appreciate all the MGVP crew does for these wonderful creatures. Hopefully the holiday season will bring brighter tidings from Rwanda. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season!

Hi Dr. Lucy -- It is so good to hear from you, even though the news is so sad...at least these deaths were caused by normal gorilla life and not because of humans. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I know it must have been painul to write...hopefully there will be a lot of good news associated with the new babies though. And ditto to what Sheryl said...the new logo is terrific. Will you be making it back to the US for the holidays?

Hi, Dr. Lucy. Nice to hear from you again, even though the news was very sad. Very sad. I accept that infanticide is part of the natural lives of many species, but I still think it sucks - particularly in endangered species.

Very sad to learn of Shinda's death, too. It feels especially sad after reading all about Pablo and his disappearance/death in the latest DFGFI newsletter. I'm interested to learn the results of all those tests whenever you get the news.

On a lighter note, the new logo is quite awesome. I hope you and the rest of the crew at MGVP have a peaceful holiday season.
